So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. Ephesians 5:28

Having been to the glorious heights in our understanding a husband’s love as modeled in Christ’s eternal love for His church, some might consider verse 28 as an anti-climax, in its consideration of marital love as loving oneself. Even so, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. On the surface this may appear to lower the standard from the perfect eternal love of Christ, to one’s imperfect and fallen love of oneself. But this is not speaking of the measure or quality of a husband’s love – it is not saying, husbands love your wife as much as you love yourself, or in the same manner that you love yourself, but rather, it reveals the nature of the marital relationship.
